We don’t throw around words like “masterpiece” lightly, but this truly is a masterpiece: it’s fast, funny, absolutely gorgeous to look at, and an incredible demonstration of what your PlayStation 5 can achieve. Thanks to the PS5’s SSD, there are no loading times between levels, and the haptic feedback of the controllers gives each weapon a distinct personality. It’s an absolute blast to play for gamers of all levels.

Hades is a roguelike, which means you will die. A lot. But that’s okay, because each time you die, you retain the powers, loot, and weapons you have already accumulated, allowing you to return to the place of your death and take down your killers before inevitably being killed by something else.
In Hades, you play as Zagreus, the deeply sarcastic son of Hades, and you’re trying to escape from the Underworld. All you need to do is traverse four regions and make it to the surface. And to do that, you’ll die hundreds of times. But that’s okay, because Hades is perfectly suited for it: it has that “just one more go” feeling that keeps you playing over and over again.
The game isn’t much different on PS5 compared to PS4 – the visuals are a bit sharper, and you don’t have to wait as long between rooms – but we believe the PS5 version is the best way to experience it, especially because the DualSense controllers are ideal for this type of action game. It’s one of our favorite PS5 games, and we’ve spent endless hours on it.
12.RETURNAL
What if Hades looked more like Death Stranding, gave you space guns, and was a lot more sadistic? That’s Returnal, a stunningly beautiful and hilariously difficult roguelike that will have you coming up with new swear words thanks to its exceptionally long runs: if you mess up, and you will mess up often, you’ll have to start all over again. The weapon handling is wonderful, the environments are breathtaking, and the enemies are formidable; Returnal is beautiful, exhilarating, and really, really, really hard.
11.DEATHLOOP
If you love Returnal or Hades, you’ll love this game. Arkane Studios, famous for the incredible Dishonored and Prey series, has created its own version of the time loop genre, and it might just be the best PS5 game you can buy right now. According to the Guardian, it’s a “hyper-violent interactive version of Groundhog Day directed by John Woo in his prime, with sets stolen from the Moulin Rouge.” We think that’s a bit of an exaggeration. Whether you dive in for a quick session or settle in for an extended play, Deathloop is a bit like Hades in that it hits the sweet spot: challenging enough to be a real thrill, but not so much that you give up in disgust. It’s a feast for the eyes, an adrenaline-packed adventure you’ll keep coming back to.
10.GHOST OF TSUSHIMA: DIRECTOR’S CUT
This is one of those games that you show off to your non-PS5 friends to showcase your console: what was pretty on PS4 is absolutely stunning in its PS5 incarnation. You play as a Samurai, fighting to protect the island of Tsushima during the Mongol invasion of feudal Japan. It’s an incredible achievement, both artistically and technically, and one of the most captivating PS5 games you’ll play.
9.DEATH STRANDING – DIRECTOR’S CUT
You never know what to expect from a Hideo Kojima game, but even by the standards of the game guru, this one is a bit different: you’re a deliveryman delivering packages in a post-apocalyptic America, and you’ll either love this game with all your heart or hate it with every fiber of your being. The game truly divides opinions: some consider it a masterpiece, while others find it “incredibly boring.” Its Metacritic score of 86% suggests that the former are much more numerous.
8.FAR CRY 6
This is a pre-order – it will be released on October 7th – but the combination of Far Cry and Giancarlo Esposito makes Far Cry 6 an easy sell. The latest installment of the Far Cry franchise introduces a new island, Yara, where you play as a guerrilla fighter fighting against a vicious dictator. 5.DEMON’S SOULS
There are two types of people in the world. There are those who think Demon’s Souls is so difficult it borders on sadism, and then there are those who laugh at those people. If you scoff at easy modes and prefer your difficulty level to be more punishing than the hardcore, you’ll love the combination of stunning graphics and ridiculously challenging hack-and-slash gameplay. Demon’s Souls might be the easiest of the Souls games, but it’s still much, much harder than the average PS5 game.
4.SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES
Spider-Man is good, but Spider-Man: Miles Morales is even better. It looks incredible in 4K HDR, presents an incredibly realistic New York that looks spectacular, and at 60fps, it’s an absolute joy to swing from skyscraper to skyscraper. Miles is an awesome character, the story is fun and snappy, and of course, the action is thrilling.
3.CONTROL: ULTIMATE EDITION
Control was already great on the PS4, but it’s even more amazing in its PS5 Ultimate Edition. The ray-traced graphics make it even more beautiful to look at than the original, and since it includes both DLCs, it’s also more enduring. In many ways, it feels like the game it was meant to be: the PS4 version had performance issues, but on PS5, you can play in Performance mode at 1440p and 60 frames per second.
Control is one of the strangest games you’ll play, and if you’re familiar with its predecessor Alan Wake – set in the same world and about to be reissued for the PS5 – you’ll have an idea of what to expect from a game that revels in the unexpected. We won’t spoil it for you, other than that your mission, to find your missing brother, takes you to a mysterious building that seems to defy the laws of physics, gravity, or reason. It’s a breathtaking, jump-scare-filled, and often incredibly tense shooter that takes familiar game and film genres and folds them into new, bizarre forms.
2.BORDERLANDS 3
Whisper it. We think the Borderlands series is more fun than Halo, and not just because of the nearly infinite amount of guns and ever-growing chaos. If the humor doesn’t put you off – Borderlands 3 has a very online vibe this time around, and some of the key characters are just YouTubers – the campaign is brilliant solo or in co-op mode, and there are plenty of interesting worlds to explore while shooting varied people with increasingly wacky guns.
The PS5 version makes great use of the DualSense controls, offers 3D sound, and can accommodate up to four players in local co-op; you also have the option to choose between Performance mode and Resolution mode to push your PS5 to its limits. Borderlands 3 on PS5 is undoubtedly the best Borderlands experience you can have on a console.
1.CYBERPUNK 2077
Controversial, we know. But even if this troubled and often over-the-top game still doesn’t fully take advantage of the power of the PS5 – for a bustling city, every street still seems oddly empty compared to the PC version – and it’s far from the avant-garde masterpiece we were promised, Cyberpunk 2077 remains extremely enjoyable to play. It’s especially good when you level up and start getting fun stuff like giant scissor arms and ridiculously powerful weapons, and even if it’s not as clever as it thinks it is – for example, its attempts at satirizing sexism just come across as sexist – it’s still a great adventure.
