Class group names are great for building a sense of classroom rapport and team bonding. Elementary school classrooms are often divided into groups of tables, with each table having its own group name. To instill a sense belonging, entire classes or whole schools may want to create a group name.
Online learning has made it possible to create group relationships using virtual group names.

Group Work at School – Why it’s so Important!
The development of cognitive and social skills is essential when working in groups. When students work with others, they learn to see things from other people’s perspectives. This can help students to overcome obstacles and problems.
As a teacher, I’ll often try endlessly to explain things to my 8 year old students … then I get one of those students to rephrase what I said once and all of a sudden, the whole group gets it! Sometimes children are better at explaining things to their peers at their level.
When working with others, students also have the opportunity to learn important vocabulary. Students can talk to each other to learn not only how to use language, but also how to actively apply it. This isn’t only good for ESL students, but all classrooms.
Another reason that groups are important is their social skills. Students should learn to collaborate and to take on the roles of learner and leader. When a student helps teach another student at the desk, they’re developing skills like patience, effective communication, and belongingness.
Why Class Names Matter
Coming up with a name for your class is a fun Week 1 activity to break the ice with your students. A class group name can create a sense for belonging, community, and inclusion among students.
The school can create a sense of competition by assigning school groups team names. You could even create whole school team names so the entire school’s got a name, or four or five group names for the school like the houses in Harry Potter – ‘Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff’.
All these types of school group names can create that sense of inclusion that you’re after.
Conclusion
Group names for a class or whole school are fun, allow children to express their creativity, and can foster a sense of belonging for your students. These class group names will inspire students to create their own fun names.
Make sure that the team names are not too restrictive or create a negative atmosphere in your school or classroom.
