I kept my eye out for birthday photo ideas that show the child’s age and are super simple. And now I’m sharing a list of 15 easy birthday photo ideas so you can be inspired to try some out for your little one’s birthday photo!

Each of my kids loves having a birthday portrait taken of them. It’s a great way to capture who they are at that age, and to have a consistent progression of portraits over the years.
Plus they’re great to pass out to family or to feature in your scrapbook, photobook or album.

1. The age is written in wood letter blocks. This is an ideal idea for young children to build their blocks towers and learn how to read. They’re colorful, classic, and easy!

2. Banner age for paper bunting. This can be used for any age. It can be personalized with any color or style to fit the birthday boy/girl. You can make a big statement with little preparation!

3. A chalkboard can be used to write numbers. Chalkboard signs are popular these days for a reason – they’re classic and simple! You can’t go wrong and it works for any age.

4. BirthdayPhoto chalkboard printable. In case you don’t have a chalkboard, or neat chalk-writing skills, you can use these free printable chalkboards (designed by yours truly!). 5. “I’m this many!” Child holds up fingers for their age. It doesn’t get much easier than that! This might be difficult for a one-year old, but it is easy for years 2-10! There are no props or preparations. Just sweet little fingers.

6. Large number of wood. This works for any age, and it’s a great prop for the child to hold without the risk of it messing up. Win! You can find these items on Etsy.
7. Balloons number the child’s age. What kid doesn’t love balloons on their birthday? This is best for children aged one to five years old, but you can get 10 balloons for your 10-year-old! It would be nice if the birthday boy or gal could pick their balloon colors every year or coordinate them to their birthday party outfit.

8. You can age your shirt. These are very popular on Etsy (find it here). You can also DIY one with a plain tee and iron-on transfer or buy one from a shop (Old Navy sold them in the past).

9. Age number is formed from favorite small things (cars or rocks, marbles, crayons, etc.). This adds a lot more personality to the birthday portrait. You’ll have to lay it out on the floor or ground and take the photo from above.

10. Place a large number of people outside. This idea is urban and I love how the girl looks next the huge number four. You could also try to find numbers in your local area for birthday photos.

11. Scrabble is the best way to say it. Spell your child’s age in Scrabble pieces they hold in their hands for a unique and adorable birthday photo!

12. Digital overlay age. You just need to leave enough space around your child when you take this photo. You can then add their age to a photo editing program, or add some fun facts and/or their name to personalize it.

13. Number painted. You can tape a large piece of paper to the wall, or use an easel to let your artist paint their ages. It is possible to capture action shots while painting, and then take portraits of the completed masterpiece.

14. Chalk number on sidewalk. This is a great idea to use for warm weather birthdays. It doesn’t matter if you keep it simple or add personal touches, such as a crown to represent a princess. You can let your child draw around the number to create a memorable portrait.

15. BirthdayThese cake candles are delicious. Does it get more “birthday” than this? It’s simple, colorful, affordable, brilliant!
