Inside: Taking monthly baby pictures is an easy way to document your little one’s growth. These are 23Creative monthly baby photos ideas that are both simple and cute

My husband has a photo collage at his parent’s house that shows how he grew up over the years.

It’s so beautiful that I decided to take monthly photos of my children as they grow up, just like my mother-in law.

But I didn’t realize until my first was 3 months old that I should have nailed down a consistent monthly baby photo theme.

Thankfully I’ve had several years to practice and I’ve developed several tips and tricks to help with your baby photos.

I’ve also found a bunch of creative monthly baby photo ideas from other moms that I think you are going to love!

Blanket Background Simple

Here are Hudson’s monthly baby photos (we kept it simple by using his favorite blanket as the background)

Background: White Fur Rug

I took Ella on this fur rug I purchased at IKEA.

Here’s how Ella’s pictures turned out :

White Fur Rug, and Wood Slice

And you don’t feel like that fur rug is only for your baby girl pictures.

I love Makelle using the same rug for her little guy.

To document each month, she added a wooden slice and used the same slice as a topping to his smash cake. This is so creative and cute!

Seasonal Numbers

If you want to incorporate the number of months, Kati has some great ideas for using what’s available depending on what time of year it is.

This is a great idea. It allows you to recall how old your children were in the seasons.

Anna chose a similar theme and created a cute little boy!

Floral numbers

If you’re feeling really ambitious, making the numbers out of flowers can be a great baby girl monthly picture idea.

Kelli is great at it! Look at how beautiful it is!

Digital Flower Numbers

If you don’t want to buy flowers every month, you can still achieve that same look.

I love how Jessica used the baby monthly photo app Rhonna Designs to add a flower number to her little girl’s pictures.

Digital MonthlyStats

I keep a Google Doc with the stats of each child. But I love Shaylie’s integration of these stats into her baby photos month-by-month.

PicMonkey is used to create the text.

Monthly PhotoBook

Another option is to print out books with your baby’s monthly picture on the cover.

Kelsi has gotten super creative with this and says her little girl loves looking at the books she’s printed out.

Holding Baby

I love how she’s holding her little girl in the pictures, and that’s what Hillary does each month too.

I think it’s a great idea to have mom or dad in the picture to really see how much baby has grown!

Floral Theme

Continuing the floral theme, I wanted to incorporate holding baby, flowers, and the time of year in Mia’s monthly photos.

Stuffed Animal

Growing is fun! Place your baby next to a toy animal to capture their monthly pictures.

Marianne used a cute elephant for her son’s monthly pictures.

Here’s another cute stuffed animal idea that Markie did.

Chair and Balloon

A chair can also be used to measure the size of your child.

Jasmine is a monthly user of a chair and a dog. It’s so cute!

Chair and Stuffed Animal

Ashley incorporated a chair, stuffed animal, and wood numbers in her daughter’s photos.

It’s so fun to see how much they grow over one year!

Creative Numbers

Katie created such a fun story with her daughter’s pictures every month.

The captions said:

“She makes such a racket that she could be a tennis player.”“She is such a card that she could be in a magic trick. We’d pick her every time!”“She has grown so much this year that she could be a gardener. We cannot wait to see who she blossoms into.”

So cute!

Chalkboard Background

Kayli writes the month on a chalkboard.

This is a great idea to write monthly stats!

Paper Background and Marker

If you have beautiful handwriting you can follow Jamie’s idea to use markers and white paper to write the month for your photos.

It seems like her daughter was involved in drawing some of these photos.

Pizza Box

This next idea is so cute! I love the idea of using pizza slices and the box to document baby’s growth. Dani is certainly creative!

Letterboard and dog

Here’s another adorable idea using the family pet and a letter board. Carolyn thought of such a unique and sweet way to document her son’s monthly photos.

Felt Letters

I’m in love with this next idea to use felt letters for the monthly photos. Julie, Famille Summerbelle, created these adorable photos featuring her son.

Numbered Onesie

Morgan bought these beautiful number oneies from About Another and used it for her monthly pictures. It’s a great idea because you can save the onesies to use for their first birthday party or to display in their room!

Holiday Theme

Markie is a great mom, and takes holiday pictures with her little boy. They all turned out adorable, I think. Especially that Valentine’s one.

How can you take a photo of your baby at home?

Here are some tips for taking monthly baby pictures

Be consistent. The background doesn’t have to match up perfectly, but if it can that’s what makes the photos look cohesive.

You must ensure that your baby is happy. I find that after they’ve eaten and are playful in the morning is the best time to capture those fun smiles.

Natural light is best. If you place baby on the floor next to a window, you’ll get the best lighting.

Don’t get stressed out over these photos! You don’t have to be a professional. If you don’t have a DSLR, don’t sweat it! Many of these moms use an iPhone or Android. This is the DSLR I own and this lens I use.

If you’re busy, just push it back a few days. It doesn’t have to happen right when they reach a new month. It won’t happen!

Monthly PhotoDisplay

So now, after all the cute photos you have taken each month, what’s next?

A display can be made in a very creative way!

  • Floral hoop photo display on wall.

These are all of the photo displays I’ve created for my babies’ first birthday parties. They make wonderful party decor. You can also hang them in their bedrooms or on the walls so that they can recall how they looked when they were babies.

I’ve put all of the displays in our house next to their blessing outfits.

When my children walk down the hall, I love to show them all the photos.
