It is very disappointing when you invest money in a TV, only for it to stop working. If you have a Sharp TV that won’t turn on, has no sound, has no picture or is flashing, it is more than likely that you can fix the issue yourself. This guide will help you with these common issues so that you can continue using your Sharp TV.
Many issues with your Sharp TV can be fixed with a firmware update or by resetting the TV. You can also check the TV has power, the TV is well-ventilated, the remote is working, all connections to and from the TV are working and that the settings on your TV and connected devices are correct.
I will go into each of these solutions in more detail below and explain exactly which settings you need to change to fix your TV. This section will help you save time and provide basic troubleshooting tips.
Sharp TV Not Working
When you are faced with a Sharp TV that is not working, the standard troubleshooting methods include performing a hard reset, a firmware update or a factory reset. Below are instructions on how to perform each one.
Hard Reset
One common issue with Sharp TVs is that they tend to malfunction if there is a power outage or power surge. Performing a hard reset will clear the errors from the TV’s memory without erasing any of your downloaded content or preferences.
Step 1: Turn off the TV and all connected devices.
Step 2: Unplug the TV from the power.
Step 3: Press and hold the power button on the TV for 30 seconds.
Step 4: Wait another 10 minutes with the TV unplugged.
Step 5: Plug the TV and devices back in.
Step 6: Turn on the TV.
Firmware Update
Keep your TV’s firmware up to date to fix any bugs that might occur in previous models of the firmware.
Step 1: Press the ‘Menu’ button on the remote.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings > Support > Check Software Update
Step 3: If a new version of the firmware is available, confirm the installation.
Factory reset
A Sharp TV can be reset to factory settings in one of two ways. Remember that factory resets will delete all downloaded content as well as your saved preferences. However, this is the most effective at clearing errors in your TV.
To reset the TV without a remote, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Unplug the TV from the power.
Step 2: Hold down both the ‘Channel Down’ button and ‘Input’ button on the TV.
Step 3: Continue holding these two buttons as you plug the TV back into the power socket.
Step 4: Release the buttons once the TV has completed start-up.
Step 5: Select ‘Factory Reset’ from the ‘Service Mode’ menu.
Step 6: Wait for the TV to restart.
You can access factory reset via the main menu if you are using the remote.
Step 1: Press the ‘Menu’ button on the remote.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings > System/Support/Setup > Factory Reset.
Step 3: Press the ‘Ok’/’Play’ button three times to start the reset, or select ‘Reset’ and enter your TV passcode. This default passcode is ‘1234’.
Sharp TV Won’t Turn On
If your Sharp TV won’t turn on, this means that it is not receiving power. First try plugging your TV into a different power outlet, or plug it directly into the wall if it was previously plugged into a power board. Sometimes, the power board may become too loaded and malfunction.
If none of these options work, you can try the following solutions. Another option is to perform a hard reset as described above. Another possibility is that the TV is on but the screen is not working, but you can read more about this issue further down.
Overheating
TVs will produce a lot of heat, particularly if they are used for extended periods of time. If your TV is enclosed in a tight space and not well ventilated, it ca overheat.
An overheated TV will not turn back on until it has cooled down, assuming no internal damage has been done to the circuit board. To fix this, let the TV rest overnight and clear any nearby obstructions from the vents.
Standby Mode
Your TV may also simply be in ‘Standby’ mode. To get it to wake up, press and hold the power button. However, you can also check that the ‘Main Power’ switch on top of the TV is also switched on.
The ‘Sleep Timer’ function is what puts the TV into ‘Standby’ mode, so if you do not want this to occur, you can turn it off in the settings outlined below.
Remote
If you are trying to turn the TV on with the remote, it may be that your batteries need replacing or the buttons are stuck. You can test this by using the button on the TV instead. If the TV still turns on using this button, the remote is your issue.
If the buttons are not working, or you have new batteries, you can reset your remote by taking out the batteries and pressing each button at minimum once. The remote will then start to drain any remaining power. To clear any debris, press the power button several times.
Circuit Board
If none of the above methods are working, it is likely that the circuit board within the TV is broken. This is often caused by broken capacitors. If your TV is still under warranty, consider requesting a replacement/repair, or you can try to source a replacement circuit board yourself.
Sharp TV Has No Sound
For a Sharp TV with no sound, you should first make sure that you check the following.
- The volume has been increased.
- The TV is not on ‘Mute’.
- The correct input channel is selected for your device. For example, selecting ‘HDMI 2’ if it is plugged into the ‘HDMI 2’ port.
If you have checked these simple solutions, you can also try a hard reset or reset the TV to factory settings. Here are some alternatives.
Settings
Most of the time, the TV will not have sound because the settings on your device or TV are preventing it. Each device’s settings will differ, so it is worth reading the instruction manual. However, for a Sharp TV, you can check the following settings.
- ‘Audio Output’ is set to ‘Fixed’ to use the TV speakers or ‘Variable’ if using an external speaker.
- The ‘Auto Volume’, ‘3D Surround’ and ‘Balance’ settings are all set to ‘Off’.
These settings can all be found in either the ‘Audio’ settings or ‘System’ settings, depending on the model of your Sharp TV.
Connections
Sometimes is may be a loose or faulty wire coming from a device to the TV, or from the TV to an external speaker. Re-insert all cables or use a different, or better cable.
Sharp TV Has No Picture
No Picture on One Input Channel
If you have no picture on one particular input channel, it may be that either the connection is loose or the cable is broken. A cable that isn’t compatible with the video signal could also be an issue. This is most common if you’re transferring 4K video with a standard HDMI Cable.
After you have checked the cable you need to make sure that you are using the correct input channel. If it is a satellite TV box, make sure you have tuned the channels.
No Picture on All Input Channels
If your TV has no picture at all, regardless of what channel you are on, there are a number of possible causes. First, make sure the ‘Sleep Timer’ is not activated, as mentioned earlier.
Another setting that will turn off the screen is the ‘Audio Only’ feature. This will turn off the screen when you’re listening to music. It will also turn on any button on your remote, except the power button. The following steps will disable this feature:
Menu > Settings > System > Advanced Settings > Audio Only > Off
You may also be experiencing a hardware issue, such as a broken circuit board or backlight. These issues will need to be assessed and repaired by a Sharp technician.
Sharp TV Flashing
The most common cause of a ‘Flashing Sharp TV’ relates to the warning light at the front of the TV flashing. This light will flash when you are operating the TV (pressing buttons), or if the TV has an error.
