Axolotls are a type of salamander. However, unlike other salamanders, they do not undergo metamorphosis routinely and remain aquatic for as long as they live. These unique amphibians are found in a variety of colors including black, golden, white, gray, pink and more.
They aren’t as common as snakes or large lizards, but they have a growing fan base in exotic pet communities. Although they are a hardy pet that is easy to care for, axolotls need to be kept in a water tank while being held in captivity.
If you’re fond of keeping exotic pets, petting an axolotl can be a great way to start. These are some things to keep in mind.
- Axolotls are larger than a normal salamander so you will need a 15-20 gallon fish tank.
- The tank should be kept at a temperature between 57 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit (14-20 degrees Celsius) because Axolotls can grow to large for a cool-water amphibian. The temperature should never go above 75 °F (24 °C).
- You can coat the bottom of the fish tank with regular aquarium sand, and make sure that your tank contains aquatic plants, natural rocks, and plenty of places for the axolotl to hide.
- You won’t require any special lighting for the tank (unlike reptiles). Your axolotl will actually appreciate a dark hiding place such as a flowerpot placed on one side.
- Axolotls are more wasteful than fish and other small reptiles so it is important to regularly change the tank filter to maintain a clean aquarium.
- Axolotls are not too social and wouldn’t really benefit from having a companion. In fact, baby axolotls can display cannibalistic behaviors so it’s best to keep them in separate tanks if you own more than one of them.
- Axolotls can be carnivores. Baitworms, bloodworm cubes and frozen shrimp are the best foods for them. Your axolotls can be treated with a piece of raw hamburger meat.
- Axolotls may not be legal to own in certain states so be sure to check with your State’s agency before you get one.
