From the genesis of the D&D game, random lists have been used to create, inspire, and complicate games everywhere. The GM basically keeps all knowledge about a fabricated world in his or her head. This includes all relevant laws of physics, mechanics, and is transformed into a live story around the table. Sometimes it can be difficult to create appropriate names, descriptions and NPCs. Luckily, there are certain tools that simplify a GM’s life no matter what game he or she is running.
These random generation tables are great for any topic. The They are useful but time-consuming to generate. The The good news is that I did the work upfront, so you can copy, paste and print directly from your notes.
The Names for non-player characters are provided in the first table. Names They are crucial. They give context, identity and can even elicit different emotions based on their sound. A well-crafted name can give dimension and weight to an item or person. Gandalf is an example. The The word’s sound and structure give it an old-world, vaguely medieval connotation. The Gand’s root, like Rand or Brand, has a strong masculine note. The word’s overall appearance is similar to that of grandpa, which evokes wisdom or age.
You might find it strange to name Mike and Fran, but this is what makes them so unique. It simply wouldn’t have the right ring to it. (Mike, the prince of Undeath?) This is why I offer a list of possible names to keep your game colorful and full of inspiration.
You can choose to roll randomly, or pick one that best suits your character. A random result could even give you a hook to help you build out that NPC’s personality, too. Some names are more gender neutral than others. You can change them to make them more feminine or more masculine. The same holds true for changing a name from a more masculine one to a feminine one—do what you need to do for that character and your game! These are starting points, not end points.
