The Harry Potter books and films have charmed children (and adults) for years now, so why not name your newborn after your favourite HP character?

Harry Potter baby names for boys
- Arthur – The name Arthur was made famous by the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Arthur Weasley, the father of seven Weasley kids is Charles.
- Charles – Charles is the name of a freeman. The name became popular with Prince Charles, Charles Dickens and more recently, Charles Weasley from Harry Potter.
- Frederick – Frederick means the “peaceful leader”. Fred, Freddie, and Freddy are shorthands. The name Fred was also used in Harry Potter for the twin brother of George Weasley.
- George – George is a Greek name that means ‘farmer’, ‘earthworker’. George Weasley was the younger brother of the Weasleys.
- Justin – Justin is the Latin name Justinus. It has the meaning of being just and fair. Justin Finch Fletchley was a Muggle-born wizard who was also a member Dumbledore’s Army.
- Oliver – The meaning for the name Oliver is “The olive tree”. An olive tree is a symbol of beauty and dignity. Oliver Wood was a Scottish Wizard. Oliver was a Keeper and Captain of the Gryffindor team who taught Harry Potter how to play Quidditch.
- Ronald – Ronald was most commonly used in Scotland and northern England in the Middle Ages. It is a ruler of decision. Ron Weasley, the sixth and youngest child of Arthur and Molly Weasley, was born in June. Ron was best friends with Harry Potter and Hermoine Granger.
- Neville – Neville is a French surname that means: “from the new Village”. Neville Longbottom was mostly a shy, clumsy, introverted boy and was sorted into the Gryffindor House along with Ron, Hermoine and Harry.
- Kingsley – Kingsley, which is an Anglo-Saxon name, means: “from the king’s meadow”. Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt served as an Auror for the Ministry of Magic before joining the Order of the Phoenix.
- Percival – Percival means ‘pierces valley’. Percival Dumbledore, the father of Albus Dumbledore, Aberforth Dumbledore, and Ariana Aumbledore, was Percival.
- Ted – The meaning Ted of the name is ‘wealthy protector’, which is also an abbreviation from Theodore. Ted Tonks, a child of muggle parents, received his invitation to Hogwarts in the age 11. He was also sorted in to the Ravenclaw House.
- Harry – We could hardly have a list of Harry Potter names without including Harry! It’s actually an old German, form of Henry, meaning ‘home ruler.
- Rubeus is a Latin word that means “red” and comes from Rubeo. Hagrid, the beloved, was born Rubeus.
- Albus – It’s a Latin, meaning ‘white’ and is the first name of Hogwarts headmaster, Professor Albus Dumbledore.
- William – This old German name, means ‘strong-willed warrior’. Bill Weasley, who gave William this nickname, inspired it.
- James – An English name, meaning ‘he who supplants’, Harry Potter’s father is names James.
- Lucius – This Latin name means “light”. Lucious Malfoy, a death-eater and father to Draco Malfoy, is Lucious Malfoy.
- Peter – St Peter was one of Jesus’s disciples in the Bible. In Harry Potter, Peter Pettigrew is more commonly known as Wormtail.
- Dudley – Old English, meaning ‘people’s field’. Dudley Dursley is the cousin of Harry Potter.
- Seamus – An Irish variant of James, meaning ‘he who supplants’, Seamus Finnigan is a classmate and fellow Gryffindor student.
Harry Potter baby names for girls
- Aurora – The meaning of the name Aurora is dawn. It is named after the Roman mythological god of dawn. Professor Aurora Sinistra, a witch, was an Astronomy professor at Hogwarts.
- Emmeline-The name Emmeline is a symbol of acceptance and the origin of the word ‘work’. Emmeline Panhurst, the leader of the Suffragettes. More recently, Emmeline Vance was a witch in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
- Fleur – Fleur, the French name for a girl, is Fleur. It means “flower” in French. It was first used as a name in the Middle Ages. Fleur Delacour was the Beauxbatons’ champion in the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter.
- Hermione – The name Hermoine means ‘well-born’. Hermione was born to King Menelaus and Helen of Troy’s daughter. Hermione Granger is a Muggle-born wizard in Gryffindor and best friends with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley.
- Luna – Luna is the name of the moon. She was the Roman mythological moon goddess. Luna Lovegood was sorted in the Ravenclaw House and joined Dumbledore’s Army in her fourth-year.
- Lily – Lily is the givenname directly from the Lily flower. It connotes pure and passionate. Lily J. Potter is Harry Potter’s mother. She was Head girl and was then sorted into Gryffindor House.
- Marietta – Marietta, the Italian name for Maria, can be translated as’seas of bitterness’ and’seas of sorrow’. Marietta Edgecombe was a Ravenclaw House resident and Cho Chang’s best friend.
- Molly – Molly is a Hebrew name meaning ‘bitter’. It has been used in the Middle Ages to stand alone as Mary’s name. Molly Weasley is Arthur’s partner and mother to Ginny and Bill, Charlie, Percy and Fred, George, and Ron.
- Poppy – This name is derived from the Poppy flower, which is most famous in Scotland. Madam Poppy Pomfrey, a British witch and matron of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was the real Poppy.
- Bellatrix – Meaning “Female Warrior” this name has been made famous by the character Bellatrix Lestrange, a death eater and loyal follower of Lord Voldemort.
- Minerva- Minerva, the goddess of wisdom was Minerva. Professor Minerva McGonagall would be very proud to have Minerva as her name.
- Ginny – Shortened form of Virginia, meaning ‘virgin’, Ginny is the youngest Weasley and ends up going on to marry Harry.
- Lavender – Inspired by the flowering plant of the same name, Lavender Brown is in the same school year at Hogwarts as Harry and co, and during their sixth year, develops a crush on Ron.
- Astoria is a strange name that means Like A Hawk. It’s also Draco Malfoy’s name.
- Helena – This Greek name, which means “shining sunlight”, is Helena Ravenclaw’s.
- Rowena – Another famous Ravenclaw, this Welsh name means ‘slender and fair’.
- Myrtle- It’s hard to forget the famous character, ‘Moaning Myrtle. The same flowering shrub that gave this name to Ireland is the source of this Irish name.
- Padma – Meaning ‘lotus’, Padma Patil is in the same year as Harry and friends and also has an identical twin.
- Parvati – Padma is identically twin to Parvati Patil. The twins once attended the Yule ball as Harry and Ron’s dates.
- Demelza, meaning “fort upon the hill”, is a Cornish name that also refers to Griffyndor Quidditch’s Demelza Robins.
