Ways To Fix Long Curtains
Curtains can be so pricey, especially if you got made-to-order curtains.
You can save a lot of money if you have some sewing skills.

So how to fix curtains that are too long?
These simple methods will bring charm in all ways.
Method 1. Using Curtain Clips
A way to reduce your curtain’s length is with the use of curtain clips which are to be attached to hooks or rings.
These curtain clips come in a variety of lengths and have alligator clips to hold the curtains in their place.
More clips can make curtains look pleated.
However, nine clips can be used to save money.
Method #2. Hem
Another way to fix a long curtain is to put hems on it.
A hem, which is a folded piece at the bottom of a curtain, is what you need to know.
There are two methods to make a curtain hem.
That includes sewing and non-sewing methods:
No-sew hem
No-sew hems are suitable for those who don’t know how to sew or don’t have the time.
Stick-on iron tap will do the trick.
You can either buy one at your local department store or order one online.
These adhesive solutions will require fabric that is heat resistant.
Some fabrics aren’t just cut out for heating elements, so this makes them an exception in this method.
Measure the desired length of your curtain. Fold the fabric to locate the edge.

Fold the excess in half and attach strips of stick-on tape. Some tapes are adhesive-based and some have paper backing.
You’re going to stick the strips and peel out the paper on the other side.
To prevent unnecessary peeling off, make sure you attach the folded hem correctly.
Use an iron for clothes to iron the folded hems. This will ensure that the tape stays in place.
Advantages:
- Easy to use
- Have neat appearance
- No sewing needed
Disadvantages:
- Messy to remove
- Costly
- Not suitable for shower curtains
Sewn hem
Another way of incorporating hems into long curtains involves sewing.
Sew it yourself or use a sewing machine.
To Make one and measure the curtain length.
Then fold the edges in two. To secure the fabric, attach pins.
Place the pins at least half an inch away from the edges.

That is to give space for sewing later.
Sew the hem end to end if you’re using a sewing machine.
To Make sure it is neat and sew it about an eighth inch from the edge.
But if you don’t have a sewing machine, you can always sew it by hand.
Basic sewing is all you need to know.
You can use backstitch, or you could do the basting.
Once you are proficient with these basic stitches, you can use them in many different applications.
Advantages:
- For long-term remedy
- Not easily torn
- Durable
Disadvantages:
- Not as neat as iron-on tapes
- Time-consuming
Make a rod pocket
Another way to shorten a long curtain is to add a header or a rod pocket.
This can be used to slide the rod right.
You can also add another rod pocket to hang the curtain with a rod.

Fold the curtain down twice from the top and pin it using sewing pins to keep it in place.
Either sew it manually or use a sewing machine. You can also use the stick on iron method described above.
My Experience
I’ve loved to alter my curtains at home because I have a mini sewing machine at my house.
My experience has shown that sewn edges worked best for me. I also have a sewing machine so why not use it!
My curtains are often longer than necessary so I can have them adjusted to the right size.
Now I have the ability to make my curtains hems.
Let me know how you did it using the above methods.
